Part 1
This will be the first in a series of articles in which I will highlight the good and the bad of the luxurious and economically priced German sports cars that have been released this year. From the Audi RS5, to the Rolls Royce Phantom, down to the Volkswagon Jetta, (TDI wagon).
Now rest assured there will be specs, pictures, links, and enough information that will keep you, basically glued to your screen waiting for my next post. I am positive that somebody out there has seen these cars at some point this year, so, let’s keep it real. I know secretly you wish could sit in one, let alone rip through Germany’s Autobahn at full speed with no restrictions. I’m going to do my best to make sure you get all of what you need out of these articles and more. I enjoyed doing the research for each and every one of these great German sports cars that you picked. Without further ado, let us, begin…
The first car on the block is the 2011 Audi RS5 Coupe. The first thing I’m going to say about this car is, it’s not a car. It’s a beast on wheels. Audi has developed this “All Wheel Drive” monster that is a true rival of BMW’s M3. This by no means is a small undertaking. So let’s see, where do we start? The exterior looks like a good place to begin our journey! What can I say about this extremely aggressive, blindingly sexy, attention grabbing, get the f@%k outa’ my way fascia. Sorry, went a little overboard there. But come on, this car has the look of a caged animal. Not many cars on the road today can put a fearful hustle in your footsteps when it’s sitting at a light, growling and snarling, as it waits for the that green, poursuivre. (for those who do not know, that mean.. Lets Go Get’em!) Now you may think I’m over doing it a bit but, I most certainly am not. There are already tuner groups out there that have tweaked this beast to fit the desires of speed freaks everywhere. Names like Senner, SKN Tuning, and ABT Tuning have made this car’s exhaust note sound more vicious than it did coming off of the assembly line. Now mind you, we haven’t even begun to discuss the real specs of this incredible piece of artistry.
To start the 2011 Audi RS5 has a spread sheet of facts that read better than the Wall Street Journal and, it’s more entertaining too. The RS5 comes with a “naturally aspirated” DOHC V8 engine, that’s can push out a strong 450hp at 8200 RPM’s. In layman’s terms, that means it comes stock, with no need for power adders. The Audi RS5 has no turbos, no superchargers no nothing, with everything all at the same time. Now, most Japanese RPM gauges stop around 7500, but this one red line’s at 8450. That right there is brutal, it’s just sick. The sheer temptation to constantly push the pedal to the floor and not have to worry about anything breaking is mind numbingly disturbing. Now paired with that, an awesome source of energy that is, the 7 speed double clutch automated manual gear box. This piece of machinery deserves an award for Best Supporting Actor. The downside of all this is the scant 320lbs-ft of torque the motor produces between 4000 and 6000 RPM. I know, I said the same thing. What, seriously, that’s it? Well, it is what it is! Who really cares about 320lbs feet of torque? I mean the zero to 60 time is a brisk 4.5 seconds. That’s damn fast! That’s faster than most people take to think about farting behind someone and then blaming someone else for it! But let me continue on about this marvelous car that Audi has produced. The RS5 comes standard with a staggered set of wheels. The sizes to be exact are 20×8.5 in the front and 20×9.0 in the rear. Your playa card has now been stamped twice just for the wheels alone. Now we all know that when we go fast, we have to eventually stop. The breaks have come in monster size as well. Front rotors are a whopping 14” in diameter, and the rear rotors come in at 12” in diameter. I think if you stopped on a dime in this Audi you might get back some change.
The interior is as aggressive as the exterior. The seats are slightly reminiscent of the Bentley Sports Coupe. Very Japanese Anime meets Speed Racer that bumped into the Le Mans racing seat all wrapped in leather. Simply put the seats look like they could transform into Katana swords if need be. Now, if you haven’t noticed I did not mention the stereo. There’s one in there, but it’s not that important. You’re gonna be way too focused on driving to even bother reaching for anything else other than AC. Besides, if you’re like me, you will already be looking for the I-touch hook ups as soon as you sit down.
So to close this story of the New Audi RS5, what can I say? This car has issues, because the person who drives it will have issues. Issues like not wanting to slow down when the traffic light turns from yellow to red, and in their mind they’re thinking, “I can beat the camera”. Issues of racing EVERYONE on the highway including the cop that wants you to pull over for doing 170 in a 65. Issues like, getting mad at the sky for not making it rain enough so you can go play in the puddles, like the big kid you are. But even with those issues this car is so worth having. Granted if you have about $105,000 lying around, it is definitely worth have issues for. Sh*t I wouldn’t mind having those issues.
